In 1990 a Coalition of families and professionals in the Greater Metro Kansas City area decided that they needed to do something to educate people about the fact that, although children with mental health issues looked healthy on the outside, they were hurting on the inside. A proclamation was signed declaring the first week in May as Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week (CMHAW).

MOF4F held the first Shining Light Award Ceremony in 2007 to kick off Children’s Mental Health Week. The purpose was to recognize the journey of families and their children, youth and young adults working hard to pursue their hopes and dreams as well as community groups and individuals who supported them in their journey. The Shining Light Award Ceremony is held the first Saturday in April in Jefferson City at the Missouri Families 4 Families statewide office.
